Passage — Genesis 45:1-11
Joseph Makes Himself Known
45 Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all his attendants, and he cried out, “Have everyone leave my presence!” So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. 2 And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s household heard about it.
3 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still living?” But his brothers were not able to answer him, because they were terrified at his presence.
4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.” When they had done so, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, the one you sold into Egypt! 5 And now, do not be distressed and do not be angry with yourselves for selling me here, because it was to save lives that God sent me ahead of you. 6 For two years now there has been famine in the land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. 7 But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.
8 “So then, it was not you who sent me here, but God. He made me father to Pharaoh, lord of his entire household and ruler of all Egypt. 9 Now hurry back to my father and say to him, ‘This is what your son Joseph says: God has made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to me; don’t delay. 10 You shall live in the region of Goshen and be near me—you, your children and grandchildren, your flocks and herds, and all you have. 11 I will provide for you there, because five years of famine are still to come. Otherwise you and your household and all who belong to you will become destitute.’
Have you ever asked God, “Why am I going through this difficult situation when I am being obedient to You?” Life can sometimes take unexpected turns, leaving us confused, discouraged, and questioning God’s plan.
When prayers seem unanswered and circumstances become painful, it can be difficult to understand what God is doing. Yet, the Bible reminds us that our struggles do not mean God has abandoned us. Even in seasons of hardship, God can be working behind the scenes, strengthening our faith, shaping our character, and preparing us for His greater purpose.
Joseph’s story in the Bible is one of the most powerful examples of faith, perseverance, and trusting God during difficult times. Found in Genesis chapters 37 to 50, Joseph was the son of Jacob and was deeply loved by his father. However, his brothers became jealous of him, especially after Joseph shared dreams that revealed a future where they would bow down to him. Their jealousy eventually led them to sell Joseph into slavery, sending him far away from his family.
Despite being betrayed and facing years of hardship, Joseph remained faithful to God. He was falsely accused and imprisoned in Egypt, yet God continued to work through his life. Eventually, Joseph was given the opportunity to interpret Pharaoh’s dreams and was promoted to a position of great authority. Years later, a severe drought brought his brothers to Egypt, where Joseph had the power to help them. Instead of seeking revenge, Joseph forgave his brothers and recognized that God had used his suffering for a greater purpose.
The story of Joseph reminds Christians that difficult seasons do not mean God has abandoned us. His journey teaches us to remain faithful during trials, trust God’s timing, and choose forgiveness even when we have been deeply hurt. Joseph’s life shows that God can use painful experiences to accomplish His purpose and turn difficult circumstances into opportunities for something greater.
Like Joseph, we can choose to trust God in difficult situations, hold on to our faith, and forgive those who have hurt us, knowing that God can turn our pain into purpose.
