7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
13 This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. 16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.
God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. 18 There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.
19 We love because he first loved us. 20 Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. 21 And he has given us this command: Anyone who loves God must also love their brother and sister.
Have you ever wondered what God’s love really means and whether His love is still for you? The Bible speaks about God’s love as something deeper than a feeling, because it is a love that reaches, forgives, transforms, and gives hope.
In 1 John 4:7–21, we discover why God’s love is at the heart of the Christian faith and how His love was demonstrated through Jesus Christ. Whether you are a believer, someone struggling with faith, or simply searching for answers, this passage offers a powerful truth: God’s love is real, and it is offered to you.
The Bible tells us that God is love, showing us that love is at the very heart of His character. His love is not based on our performance, success, or ability to live perfectly. God’s love is faithful, selfless, patient, and willing to act for our good. When we want to understand what true love looks like, we can look to God as its greatest example.
God did not simply tell us that He loves us; He demonstrated His love by sending Jesus Christ into the world. 1 John 4:9–10 explains that Jesus came so that we could have life through Him and receive forgiveness for our sins. This shows that God’s love reaches us even when we have fallen short. Instead of waiting for us to become worthy, God took the first step toward us.
The greatest demonstration of God’s love is found in the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. Jesus willingly gave His life so that humanity could be reconciled to God and receive new life. This reveals that God’s love is more than words because genuine love is willing to sacrifice. If you have ever wondered how much God loves you, the cross gives us a powerful answer.
Our mistakes can make us feel unworthy of love, especially when our failures seem to define who we are. Yet 1 John 4 reminds us that God loved us first, before we could earn or deserve His love. His grace does not ignore our sins, but His love makes forgiveness and transformation possible through Jesus. No matter how far someone may feel from God, His invitation to return remains open.
Many people struggle with fear when thinking about God, wondering whether they are good enough or whether He will reject them. 1 John 4:18 teaches that perfect love drives out fear, showing us that God desires a relationship built on trust. Knowing His love gives believers confidence to approach Him without constantly fearing rejection. Even when life becomes difficult, we can remember that God has not abandoned us.
Receiving God’s love should change the way we treat other people. 1 John 4:11 says that because God loved us, we should also love one another. This kind of love can be difficult when people hurt or disappoint us, but Christian love goes beyond convenience and personal feelings. Through God’s help, we can learn to practice forgiveness, patience, kindness, and compassion.
People who do not know God may encounter His love through the actions of those who follow Him. Our words, attitudes, relationships, and willingness to help others can point people toward the character of God. Christians will never love perfectly, but God continues to transform those who follow Him. When His love is working in us, it should become visible in how we treat others.
God’s love is not simply about receiving blessings, solving problems, or having an easier life. His love invites us into a relationship with Him through Jesus Christ. 1 John 4:15–16 teaches that those who acknowledge Jesus and remain in God’s love can know that they belong to Him. You do not need to understand everything about Christianity before seeking God; you can begin by coming to Him honestly.
1 John 4:19 gives us the foundation of Christian love: we love because God first loved us. God’s love is not merely something to read about, but something we are invited to receive and reflect in our lives. If you are searching for God, you can begin by seeking Him honestly and asking Him to reveal His truth to you. The more we understand His love, the more we can trust Him, love others, and live with the hope found in Jesus Christ.
Hi, I’m Pat, the creator of Pen, Paper, and Prayer, a Christian community created to reach people who need to know Jesus and encourage fellow believers in their walk with Christ. I created this space to share faith, testimonies, and lessons from real-life situations that others may relate to. I am also part of a church worship team and occasionally volunteer in other churches. Through writing, music, and service, I hope to glorify God and help make Jesus known.
